OCD Diversity

topic posted Wed, November 30, 2005 - 10:39 AM by  Fonduie
I've seen threads from tribesters with "checking" compulsions, washing, excessive skin picking, number fixations... but nobody else with my main tick, OCHD - obsessive compulsive hoarding disorder. I have many triggers but my specialities are sharpie permanent markers, umbrellas and hairbrushes. I'm an educated self-aware person but with this I just can't help myself.

Anyone else suffer from this?

    Paper.

    Books.

    Desk accessories.

    General clutter.

    Purses and bags.

    Shoes.

My husband is the exact opposite. He's been a great influence on me. That and the show Clean Sweep. ;)

Good luck with your hoarding! Or rather, fighting it!

I'm more of the pack rat type.
There is some site on the web of a guy whose mom is a horder of EVERYTHING. He has photos of the house and how there is not even walkways though most of the house. He can't even go in his room and get on his bed anymore caus she has put stuff all over it.

Oh Jezus, I'm not as bad as that. Shit, maybe I could see the house looking like that in about 20 years if it wasn't for my husband's influence.
I've managed to hide my OCHD pretty well so far. I may need a bigger garage, cellar, closet and storage unit though!

I've known a couple of people whose hording got to the point of those pics. It is not a good thing, usually some sort of agency intervenes. My mother was a horder, but she hid it well. I never knew what extent it had gotten to until she died, and I was really horrified.

I have the potential to be a horder, but I have really worked on it. I moved twice last year, each time into a smaller place, and I was able to just abandon tons of stuff.

Good luck with this. One thing that motivates me to keep it in check is remembering how I felt when I had to handle my mother's house after she died, and not wanting to do that to my kids.

That site showing the inside of his Mom's house... holy crap. Just makes me almost nauseated.

I think I'll go clean my living room...

    Hairbrushes
    Chairs
    Books
    Papers from school
Pens (Every time I go to the store I have to buy a pack of pens.....)
    Bouncy Balls
    Lotion
    Chapstick
    Phones
    Headphones
    Pencils
    Lamps
    Pictures
    Old Movie Tickets
    Stickers
    Earrings
    Hair Gel
    Body Wash
    Hair Ties
    Shoes
    Watches
    Belts
    Purses
    Bags
    Coins
    Shoeboxes
    Candles
You name it, I probably collect it. My room is a junkyard.....I keep acquiring more things and I refuse to throw anything away!! Even though I've never been diagnosed.....I have a lot of tendencies that people attribute to OCD.....
    Arranging things a certain way
Eating things in a certain order (i.e. I always have to eat my french fries before a hamburger if I so choose to eat something......)
Checking my alarm clock and setting it 3 times a night
Even numbers of thing, or things in 3s and 7s because I like the numbers 3 and 7
If I do things out of order, such as put my car in reverse before releasing the emergency brake, it annoys the heck out of me. If I forget to set my alarm the right number of times, it will keep me up at night. And everything has to be cleaned repeatedly. The people at work get really annoyed by this :) Counters wiped down twice. Plates arranged in a certain way. Everything has a place. They hate this lol. And grammar. If something is spelled wrong I will think about it constantly. I know my manager has a sign in the office with 3 misspelled words and two grammatical errors. It bothers me. If I'm writing out an assignment for class, and I make a mistake along the way in pen, then I have to COMPLETELY start the assignment over. Do you know how long that takes me??? Even just little things though. I once rewrote a note telling my manager I needed off for an exam 5 times, just so I could make it just so.......
Do I have OCD? I really don't know. Never been diagnosed, never even seen a doctor for it!! I've only been diagnosed with depression, and that was just recently, but I think I need to see a new doctor......
Well anyways, I'm just kind of venting to pass the time..........So I guess it's time for me to shut my laptop, take a shower, brush my hair, brush my teeth, condition my hair, wash my face, wash my mouth out, take a drink of water, set my alarm three times, turn my light off, turn my fan on, turn my clock around so I can't see the light and stare at it all night, get under the covers, and go to sleep. :) Ha

Mandi, my dear, after writing that post, I do hope you no longer wonder if you're Obssessive-Compulsive. You could be the poster child!

I guess this is my diagnosis?? I mean, I've considered the fact that I might have it and everyone at work swears up and down I might have it......maybe I do.....

You've got OCD, Sweetie. Or something very like it.

          But you're not alone.

It's a pain, but it's survivable. There's cognitive therapy, other therapy, medication, or just talking to other sufferers.

There's alot of books you can read. "Brain Lock" is a good one. "The boy who couldn't stop washing" is also another good one.

The former book is good for how to stop the OCD rituals. The latter explains the symptoms many people experience, and therefore may help you understand your own.

          Hang in there. :)

I hoard, among other things. I'll buy large amounts of sale items with the idea, that I'll never know when I might need that. Same goes for old stuff. Right now I am actively trying to get rid of stuff and getting motivated for that is imposible so far. I did in about 3 weeeks time get rid of 5 % of my books and yet so much more needs to go. Then they sat there for another 3 weeks, not they are in my trunk for 2 weeks. I didn't realize the rediculousness of it till I just wrote it here right now. Bah

I am the exact opposite, or at least I was. It seems to have mutated slightly. But I used to try and get rid of as many of my possesions as possible.
