As a child, I had all the symptoms of OCD. As a teen, too. Now, I feel 90% over it all. I'm in my 40's. Anyone else here feel their symptoms have mostly gone away? (I bet they never vanish completely.)

Re: It can get better.
Wed, January 24, 2007 - 10:09 PMI think I grew out of alot of symptoms.
Scrupulosity left me in my 20's. Still have worries about if I'm really saved, but...
Problems with blasphemous thoughts have tone away. [After I figured out that I was causing them by worrying about having them, LOL!]
I honestly kindof think that a combination of meds (and knowing therefore what it's like to think, 'er, "normally"), and a sortof cognitive therapy from reading and finally understanding OCD, and when a thought is based upon it... I think basically all of that has made alot of it ease off.
But... if I get stressed out... really stressed out... all bets are off. :P
Logan, glad to hear you feel you're mostly out of the water on this.
Oh, I'm 38. -

Re: It can get better.
Wed, January 24, 2007 - 10:23 PMI am 26 and still very much affected by my OCD. I get so frustrated and depressed by my own thoughts.
I am seriously considering meds. Any suggestions or thoughts on them? I have heard that Zoloft is good. Any thoughts on medical marijuana? I just want a little peace, know what I mean?

Re: It can get better.
Wed, January 24, 2007 - 10:33 PMZoloft is pretty good. Currently on it.
Tried welbutrin + lexapro.
Before was on... Celexa + lexapro? Or maybe it was welbutrin + celexa...
Have Xanax on hand for those days when I'm bouncing off the walls in spite of the zoloft. It's come in handy a few times.
I highly recommend going on meds at least once. Try to get something that you can easily get off of. Some meds have gnarly withdrawal symptoms, although that can sometimes be dependent upon the person. Ask your psychiatrist for the best options.
Your first meds might not work for you. Don't give up, just give it a chance first, then if after a few months it's not better, ask your doctor to move you to something else.
Read alot of books. The more you understand how OCD makes you think, the better you'll be able to understand when you're, uhm, having an OCD moment. :) Eventually you can kindof tune it out, depending upon the, 'er, volume.
One neat thing I noticed with the meds... they showed me what normal was, and I was sorta able to hold onto that when I went off for a while.
Oof. I wrote a book. Sorry.
Everyone else, please add your thoughts! :) -

Re: It can get better.
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 6:08 AMI was on prozac, and that really helped. As far as the marjuana, i found that i thelp a lot with my OCD, although i do not live somewhere where medical marajuana is legal, so that created difficulties. Another thing that really helped me was i saw a therapist and did a type of therapy called ERP (exposure and responce prevention), which kinda dulled the anxieties around my obsessions and compulsions. Thats about all i got. Good luck

Re: It can get better.
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 3:40 PMIf I take care of myself, my symptoms are negligible.
Not enough sleep, proper food, water, time to get things done, and exercise will send me over the edge quickly. Stress will trigger all kinds of odd outcroppings of behavior.
I'm 46 and still have bouts of it.
