Hi, Im new here. I was wondering if there were people i could relate to. I know that i can relate to people about the ocd i have with cleaning and organizing and showering and stuff like that, but does anyone else pick at their scalp and eat what they pick off? I know it sounds really grosse, but i cant stop. I do it for hours every day and i am always late in the morning because of it. I also bite my knuckles constantly.

Re: Picking
Wed, November 15, 2006 - 8:22 PMI pick scabs. And eat them. But haven't in a long time.
I have one scar on my arm that is basically scar tissue upon scar tissue. Every once in a while I would pick the healed scar completely off.
I no longer do that, although if I have a bump (like a pimple), it's really hard not to completely scratch it off.
I do still chew on the inside of my mouth.
Anyway, welcome to the tribe. You are among friends. :)
When you bite your knuckles, are you doing it to pick off cracked skin from hands that are dried out? -

Re: Picking
Sun, November 26, 2006 - 9:24 PMI have been a picker since I was around the age of 6...started when I got the chicken pox...and sadly progressed from there. I was diagnosed with OCD at 15...and have taken every antidepressant out there...nothing really worked.
I pick my arms, my face, sometimes my legs. Winter time is really hard due to the fact that things are easier to cover up. I have eaten my scabs for about 15 years...not sure why, just seems to complete the process. I have never told anyone that, not my boyfriend, my family...no one. It is hard enough to find people to accept you when you are covered in scars...that would probably be the icing on that cake.
I pick in my sleep, in the bathroom is the worst...I at one point got a hand held video game to play while in there, but that didn't last. I used to think I just had a nervous twitch, but I am not sure. Sometimes my skin seems to almost burn...and then I squeeze, and pick until it really does burn and itch. I have tried lotions, and creams...honestly tanning in a tanning bed did wonders. So did getting fake nails...harder to pick with a thicker surface.
I am scared to death that my son will have OCD. More than my affection of school supplies and things that are all one color, I don't want him to suffer with scars as I did. I never wore shorts to school, first dates were never fun, and well sex was and usually is always in the dark. I want freedom from this, and I want freedom for him. I can't imagine what his friends would think.
Trust me you are not alone...the stat on "pickers" are about 2% of the general population in the US...we have grown over time, almost to the point where they want to give us our own diagnosis...instead of just lumping us into OCD.
Good luck with your battle...it is a hard one, one I deal with every day. -

Re: Picking
Sun, November 26, 2006 - 10:38 PMIf it helps, Zoloft is helping me right now. Sex drive currently sucks, but depression and OCD are being held mostly in check. I've got some Xanax on hand just in case.
But I've only been on it for about 2 months, so...
Have tried welbutrin+lexapro. That combination worked for a while, but then didn't seem to tackle the depression anymore.
Before that, was on a different combination... welbutrin and something else... honestly can't remember.
Your son may have OCD, but you'll know the signs, and be able to help him recognize when he's letting his OCD dictate his reactions to stimuli. -

Re: Picking
Wed, November 29, 2006 - 7:35 AMI have been on Prozac, Paxil, Wellbutrin, Zoloft, Geodone, Zyprexia...the last round was Lexapro with Neronton (not sure if that is spelled right)....I hated the idea of having to take a pill to wake up, and then one to go to bed....I think that the worst was the lack of sex drive. If anything that is one thing that I NEED!!
I come from a long line of OCD people....for example my Great Grandmother would make her grandchildren sweep the grass, to remove the dirt :) I was doomed from the beginning :) -

Re: Picking
Thu, November 30, 2006 - 12:20 AMReminds me of the episode of Monk where they were in a cabin by a lake, under witness protection.
Monk was sweeping up the patio, and was about to put the dirt in the dustpan into a trash can. The Captain said, "It's just dirt, you can put it anywhere", i.e., onto the ground by the patio, etc. Monk couldn't stand it, and hat to put it into a trash can. ;)
My Mom has OCD. She got it from possibly both grandparents, as both of them were pretty weird.
Sorry about the sex drive thing. :P
It sucks, but right now I'm enjoying not being depressed so much that I don't care about my sex drive!!! -

Yeah, my mom has OCD...although she won't really admit it. She is one of those people who want to know if anal retentive has a hyphen :)
